VITRÉ LIGHTS

An illuminated walk through Vitré, city of Art and History…

“To see one of the few Gothic towns still left entire, complete, homogeneous, such as Nuremberg in Bavaria, Vittoria in Spain […] Vitré in Brittany, and Nordhausen in Prussia.”

Victor Hugo (The Hunchback of Notre Dame)

Victor Hugo was captivated by Vitré with its cobblestone streets, half-timbered houses and private mansions bearing the distinct stamp of the Guild of Overseas Merchants, and its unique atmosphere. The history of Vitré reveals a city open to the world. The city’s architecture reflects this historical heritage. You too are sure to be captivated by this city of art and history!

SHARE IN OUR HISTORY THROUGH A DAZZLING EXPERIENCE!
SEE OUR CITY LIGHT UP!

Since 15 December 2018, Vitré has offered visitors a unique experience by illuminating its heritage. Wander through the historic centre, following the lights that enhance the city’s architectural beauty and tell the tale of a city open to the world.
Follow the path of light through the past, present and future. It is truly a sight to behold!

Enjoy this experience year round, beginning at dusk. See the city in a new way, embellished with lights revealing the steps of its history through the ages. To help you navigate, download a  visitor’s guide on this website or find one at the Tourist Office or the castle museum reception. Historical information and anecdotes in the guide will add to the illuminated “vitrégraphies” and the light displays you will find along the way.

To make the night even more magical, a sound and light show was projected on the Vitré Castle last December. The show was produced by Maison Production and designed by the composer and director Damien Fontaine. Given the success of this first edition (48,000 spectators), the show will be back for the Christmas holidays in 2019.
